Infant–Toddler COR
The Child Observation Record for Infants and Toddlers (COR) looks at the whole child — highlighting broad areas of development for children from the ages of 6 weeks to 3 years.
The Infant-Toddler COR can help you gather, organize, document, use, and learn from your observations of children within the context of everyday life at your center or home setting. You will also be able to share this information easily and effectively with parents and others.
What does the Infant Toddler COR assess?
The COR focuses on children's strengths. Unlike diagnostic instruments that focus narrowly on problems and deficits, the COR provides a complete and accurate picture of each infant's or toddler's developing abilities. This helps caregivers support the development of individual children and plan for the group as a whole.
 The Infant /Toddler assessment tool is based on six categories that represent broad domains of child development. These categories are:
• Sense of self
• Social relations
• Creative representation
• Movement
• Communication and language
• Exploration and early logic
Within each category, children are assessed on three to eight COR items that describe developmentally important behaviors (the Infant-Toddler COR has 28). Each item has five levels that indicate a typical developmental sequence for the behavior, enabling COR users to assign precise ratings to their observations of children.
How does the Infant Toddler COR work?
The COR is observation based. Adults record observations (“anecdotes”) as they care for, play with, and attend to children rather than during artificial testing situations. Anecdotes are gathered on a child over time and systematically rated according to the COR framework. This information is then compiled and analyzed to provide a comprehensive portrait of each child’s developmental gains and the progress of the group as a whole. Using COR forms and/or software, a variety of reports may be generated from this information.
What do I need to get started?
Depending on your preference, you may choose from a written version, CD-ROM version, or Web-based version. By using the Options link to your left you will find an explanation of each and the components included in each kit.
Is training necessary to use the COR?
Training is recommended for first-time users.
