Curriculum Content
► To organize the content of children's learning, the HighScope Curriculum divides the KDIs into eight content areas that parallel the dimensions of school readiness identified by the National Education Goals Panel. These categories are listed below (note that the last four categories correspond to the Goals Panel's arts and sciences category.):
(1) Approaches to learning
(2) Social and emotional development
(3) Physical development and health
(4) Language, literacy, and communication
(5) Mathematics
(6) Creative arts
(7) Science and technology
(8) Social studies
A comprehensive curriculum model, HighScope addresses all areas of development.
Eight main curriculum content areas organize children's learning in HighScope Preschool programs (see blue box). Within these areas are 58 "key developmental indicators" (KDIs). The KDIs are early childhood milestones that guide teachers as they plan and assess learning experiences and interact with children to support learning.
Each KDI is a statement that identifies an observable child behavior reflecting knowledge and skills in areas such as language and literacy, math, creative arts, and physical development. Use the links in the left menu to find a complete list of the KDIs published in HighScope's current curriculum manuals and a preview list of updated KDIs that will be integrated into HighScope materials in the future. This section also includes links to information about HighScope's approach to specific content areas..
